Avocado soybean unsaponifiables (often referred to as ASU) are a natural vegetable extract made from avocado and soybean oils. It is a drug made from unsaponifiable components of avocado and soybean oil and has been a widely used preparation in Western European countries for the treatment of osteoarthritis pain.
ASU is not restricted to chondrocytes, but also affects monocyte/macrophage-like cells that serve as a prototype for macrophages in the synovial membrane. These observations provide a scientific rationale for the pain-reducing and anti-inflammatory effects of ASU observed in osteoarthritis patients.
Avocado Soybean Unsaponifiables or ASU refers to the organic vegetable extract that is composed of 1/3rd of avocado oil and 2/3rd of soybean oil.
